Every year, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) hosts the Best in American Living Awards. This year, the January 22, 2015 awards ceremony was hosted in Las Vegas, where the most innovative design trends for the upcoming year were honored. Remodeling projects, subdivisions, condos, apartments, and single family homes were all included as part of the gala and of the award consideration process. The following takes a look at some of the unique design trends that homebuilders and renovators can expect for 2015.
The Double Island
One of the top hits at the Vegas NAHB gala was the advent of the double island, or a kitchen design featuring two islands rather than the standard single. The double island trend can be contributed to the popularity of open-space living, another trend noted at the Best in American Living Awards. One island is intended to be used for food preparation, the other for serving.
A Focus on the Bathtub
High-end showers are certainly just as in focus as ever before, with shower heads that allow you to control water flow, that feature special lighting, that play music, and that steam being all the rage. However, homebuilders in 2015 should expect to see the emergence of another popular trend focusing on bathing: a bathtub-centric bathroom. By putting the bathtub in the center of the room, bathrooms are become more meditative, relaxing, and spa-like in nature, a major plus for many.
Removing the Color
For years, big, bright, and bold colors have been a must in home design. The Best in American Living Awards shocked the color-happy idea by showcasing just the opposite: white on white, particularly in the kitchen. While knowing how to keep it clean may be a question of many homeowners – especially those with children – white on white kitchens with countertops, cabinets, backsplashes, and trim are dominating design for 2015.

Bringing Outside In
Perhaps the most popular trend of 2015 is focused around bring outside in – incorporating outdoor living into everyday life. To accomplish this feat, homebuilders and designers have put an emphasis on rooftop patios (even for those who life in the city and are limited in space, a rooftop patio can offer stunning views), California rooms, and the use of nano-walls, folding glass walls that provide a view of – and easy access to – the outdoor world. Of course, with more of a focus on outdoor living, green living continues as a top concern of designers, with more and more homes being built with energy-efficient features, some homes even being entirely self-sustaining.
